PRAYERS AND BHAKTI....A KEY TO PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH....SO SAYS CURRENT SCIENCE
Posted by Champaklal Dajibhai Mistry on December 6, 2002

vedik peoples know that one's aatamaa (soul) is key to one's well-being in a physical body.....ved calls embodiment of one's aatmaa in a physical body as jiv or a living being.. the science of knowing the relation between one's aatmaa and one's physical body is called aadhyaatmaa....the current science calls it SPIRITUALITY.....

.....and now Dr. Harold Koening, an American psychiatrist, on December 2, 2002  told a world conference on SPIRITUALITY AND HEALTH the following age- old vedik lifestyle wisdom:

"That hundreds of scientific studies are proving that religious practices such as praying (sandhyaa praathnaa), worshipping (puujaa and bhakti) and participating in communal prayers sessions such as the vedik peoples have every month grant the following benefits to humans"

...But here is the best message from Dr. Koening :....."It is not enough to attend worship services just in hopes of improving health...If you did so, then you would just get more anxious...You have to do it for the right reasons....the health effect is a natural consequence of following the religious life for religious reasons..."....in vedik lifestyle the essence of this message is called lifestyle of bhakti in a nishkaami mode...

.....the health effect

 religious reasons....

The following well known benefits in any vedik lifestyle are now discovered by current science as per Dr. Koening:

  • That there is faster recovery from depression in lifestyle with prayers and worship....( if one has a aatmaa-body understanding that one would not get depressed in the first place knowing what is real and what is unreal in one's existence in sansaar....)
  • That there is a lower incidence of suicide in lifestyle with prayers and worship.....(having knowledge of science of aadhyaatmaa, the need of terminating by force one's life journey is understood and dealt with without terminating life)
  • That there is marital satisfaction and marital stability with prayers and worship.... ( the vedik sanskaar (rite of passage of a stage in life) of vivaah (marriage) and especially the sat-pad ceremony on the marriage day makes one understands the brhmah-ordained dharma that the bride and bridegroom has to uphold during their life journey this time around....so martial satisfaction and marital stability is provided by dharmik lifestyle of each marital partner).
  • That life span of those who pray and worship is on an average seven years longer... (life span's worth is determined in vedik lifestyle not by the number of years one lives but on how much one co-exists peacefully with every one and shares everything one has with everyone else on need basis....peace (shaanti) in life get rids of a majority of physical ailments and let one enjoy the full life journey one came to enjoy...and thus it may appear to be a longer life span with peace and tranquility in life..which also brings contentment..).
  • That the separation of religion and medicine must not happen as it has existed for the past century...( in vedik lifestyle religion and medicine cannot exist without one another as they have a common source - our creator brhmah...ayurved (medical science) exists to provide relief form physical malfunctioning to the body in which aatmaa has to stay during the life journey...so how can ayurved be separate from aadhyaatmaa...)
